Successful people have a good morning routine. They don’t just wake up and hope for the best; they have a plan. A focus. A tried-and-tested way of getting from where they are when they wake up, to where they want to be. I have long admired people who have the discipline to stick to a good morning routine so I have made it my focus this month to start every morning well hoping that, after 30 days, my mornings will be calm and productive rather than hurried and stressful.
Wake at 4 am
I am a lark so rising at 4am hasn’t been difficult. It means early nights but the reward is seeing the morning as the sun rises, while it is clean, fresh, and full of potential.
Drink lemon water
I have swapped my morning cup of tea for a drink of lukewarm water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a slice or two of lemon. This citrus fruit is packed with vitamin C, potassium, and enzymes which help the liver process toxins. Drinking water that is warm rather than cold helps digestion.
Pray or meditate
I am a working mother so there is always a barrage of information flowing through my mind. Once I wake my son my focus is on him so I really love having dedicated time for morning meditation.
Set to-do lists for the day
Writing a list helps me plan my time most efficiently. I used to use paper but I have recently started using Wunderlist which is easy to use and lets me access my list from my phone, tablet, or laptop.
Eat breakfast, read
I eat what I please for breakfast. Sometimes I want something sweet, like homemade jam on toast, other times it could be porridge, a smoothie, or fruit and yoghurt. I rarely eat much but I try to make sure it is healthy to give my body the best start to the day.
Exercising and stretching is one of my favourite parts of my new morning routine. Not only does it really wake me up and get those endorphins flowing, it is so satisfying knowing that I’ve already done it.
There is absolutely no point having a shower while my son is awake, not unless I want to be interrupted so often I forget to rinse the conditioner out of my hair!
Wake my son at 7:30 am
With my morning routine complete I can focus completely on my son, and on getting him ready for his day. I love watching him wake up – some mornings he leaps out of bed while other mornings he snuggles down for “just a little dream”. It takes him about ten minutes of being up before he’s happy to talk, but once he gets going there’s no stopping him!
I am already noticing a huge difference not only in how relaxed and happy I am in the mornings, but in my son as well. He enjoys having more of my attention and I enjoy not feeling harried and stressed.
